Art and music patrons are in for a big treat on Sunday, March 29, 2009, from 2-6 PM as the annual benefit of the Santa Clarita Creative Guild unfolds at the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Valencia entitled, Love is in the Air at the Hyatt Valencia. This year’s spring event promises to be even bigger with more fine artists participating! There will be a “Public Choice Awards” for the three top choices.

A lot of community energy is being infused from all angles to make the event a great success. Another big treat for the patrons will be the much-awaited Love concert from the “Back on Track” local music group with their farewell performance before they leave for their Asian tour in spring. The threesome of Gary Friedman, Bary Lederman, & Mary Courtney will serenade art patrons with their jazz, folk, and contemporary songs, while local duo of Sheila Colby and Dezzi Rae Marshall belt out their broadway and popular tunes. Refreshments will be served, with a no-host bar.

The Art Show will feature paintings, sculptures, arts/craft, and other forms of visual art. While the exhibit is going on, three outstanding local artists, Lorelle Miller, Laura Wambsgans and Romeo Downer will feature a live artist exhibition. On the other side of the ballroom is a Youth Art Exhibit for our budding artists, to be presented by Mission Renaissance. Not to be outdone is the much-awaited yearly Silent Auction featuring art and non-art items.

The event will benefit various Art Enrichment Programs of the Guild, geared for the SCV Youth and the SCV Senior Center. Likewise, another objective is to be able to promote local artists in the community. Many of the participating artists are members of the Santa Clarita Artists Association, who is a sponsor of the event.Tickets are now on sale at $25 (prepaid) and $40 at the door.

The supercool kids at Proxart (never heard of um? start paying attention) are holding a Black&White event this Saturday at 6pm at the Bella Via Cafe on Town Center Drive. Billed as a Night for local artists to connect with other artists, the event is simple: Wear either black or white, and come enjoy some music and art as you drink some coffee. Proxart’s website and blog can give you more info, as can this video:

In this suburban land of bliss and happiness where the grass is green and the streets are clean, there is a deep pool of young musical talent. I’m not talking about little girls and piano lessons, I speak of the garage band. OK, just because the garages have tile floors and fabulous organizers doesn’t mean that kids in the SCV can’t rock. One force facilitating this rockage has been Higher Level Productions, who have been working hard to organize and promote the local music scene while giving the movement legitimacy and structure. The good folks at Higher Level have the reputation and leverage to work with the ties at City Hall, local venues and school districts, without losing their credibility with the bands. With an enormous potential audience of bored kids looking for something to do, they have a strong following and are presenting a lot of shows.

This month is full of events, so if you are ready to rock, or groove, or party in general, check out the full lineup of shows at Higherlevelshows.com or check out their MySpace page here. This Friday at the Vu Ultra Bar (formerly Rendezvous) in Newhall features UN:ARMED – an outstanding trio including Doug and Derek Gledhill. Scroll down to enjoy a music video of their song “Talk Talk.”

The Santa Clarita Master Clorale will be jubilent next month. Not that they are not happy normally – they are very happy all of the time, especially when everyone shows up to hear them perform. It’s just that on October 18th at 7:00pm at the Valencia United Methodist Church, they will be especially glad to welcome the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers to perform in a fundraising concert. Led by LA native Albert John Joseph McNeil, this internationally known group of 29 singers will revive and lift your spirit. Visit www.scmasterchorale.com for more information.

Just a few photographs of some things seen around California Institute of the Arts one day last month. This high-grade art school is full of goodness, and while not everyone craves their flavor of art, one can always find a treat within. Their cafeteria is pretty good, too. Look for more from CalArts in the coming year, and look at their website here.
