The 661Arts Free Photo Booth was present at the Festival of the Arts in downtown Newhall, and caught some very small and very big kids showing of their posing skills. Enjoy these.

Art and music patrons are in for a big treat on Sunday, March 29, 2009, from 2-6 PM as the annual benefit of the Santa Clarita Creative Guild unfolds at the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Valencia entitled, Love is in the Air at the Hyatt Valencia. This year’s spring event promises to be even bigger with more fine artists participating! There will be a “Public Choice Awards” for the three top choices.
A lot of community energy is being infused from all angles to make the event a great success. Another big treat for the patrons will be the much-awaited Love concert from the “Back on Track” local music group with their farewell performance before they leave for their Asian tour in spring. The threesome of Gary Friedman, Bary Lederman, & Mary Courtney will serenade art patrons with their jazz, folk, and contemporary songs, while local duo of Sheila Colby and Dezzi Rae Marshall belt out their broadway and popular tunes. Refreshments will be served, with a no-host bar.
The Art Show will feature paintings, sculptures, arts/craft, and other forms of visual art. Not to be outdone is the much-awaited yearly Silent Auction featuring art and non-art items.
The event will benefit various Art Enrichment Programs of the Guild, geared for the SCV Youth and the SCV Senior Center. The City of Santa Clarita is thinking about the visual and performing arts, and wants to know what you have to say. Jeff Barber from the City’s Arts and Events office is holding two upcoming sessions dubbed “Art Tank” to ask the following question of all who care to answer it, and to help form a vision for local arts: How can the public in the SCV become interested and intrigued by art? There have been three previous meetings geared toward the same topic, but new and fresh perspectives are sought. The next meeting will be held at City Hall in Suite 100A on Tuesday, February 10th from 6:30 – 8:30pm; another will be hosted during the daytime-ish hours of 4:30 – 6pm on February 18th, this time in Orchard room A. Mark your calendar and tell your friends. Light refreshments will be served to counter the heavy art talk. For more information, call Jeff at (661) 286-4078.
Oh my god, so like I was talking to Becky who just heard from Kendra that Jerrod’s brother’s girlfriend’s best friend Mackenzie totally saw robots being quarantined near the food court at the Mall? Ok so like that is just SO wrong because there are totally towns in like the Iraq, and such as, that don’t even have Malls, or robots, or like, whatever, anyways. I was like ‘no way,’ and then she was all ‘totally,’ so I was totally like ’shut. up.’ So I went to Pinkberry for lunch today, and on my way back to A&F, I checked it out and it’s totally TRUE. The Mall cops must have totally shut them down and, like, disincapacitated them cuz they were not even moving. I know, you’re like ‘pics or it didn’t happen,’ so…
EDIT: So, apparently this is actually Public Art, condoned by Westfield Valencia Town Center and instigated by the City of Santa Clarita. The show is titled “Torched Whimsical Welding” and the artist is local sculptor Dianne Foderaro, who is the first to show work in the newly designated Town Center Art Space. The exibit will run through March 8th. Totally. Click to see photos.
This animation uses time-lapse photography to show the movement and structure of sculpture created in a CalArts School of Theater class led by Michael Darling.
Weavers worked today in the College of the Canyons Art Gallery during the last day of the exhibition “The Fine Art of Weaving,” featuring the work of many local fiber artists. Bold color and heavy texture transformed many of the designs from simple patterns into abstract works that made the viewer think ‘art’ instead of ‘craft.’ To mark the end of the show, artist Lisa Skura delighted a group of patrons as she created a weaving before their eyes using a traditional Navajo tapestry loom. The show is over, but if you would like to take a peek at the work, check out the gallery of photos below.
The CalArts School of Theater hosted its fourth “Arts in the One World” international conference concentrating on the theme of ”Motherhood and Revolution: How women, and mothers in particular, are innovating in conflict and post conflict circumstances, and expanding the models for ways in which one is an artist in the world.” Big theme. The five-day event dealt to a large extent with esthetic diversity, and each full day was dedicated to one region of the world facing hardship: Rwanda, Palestine and Kurdistan. The conference was full of lectures and performances – click through to view some great photos of the event, and check their site for more information.
Artists of the Santa Clarita Valley are invited to submit work for an upcoming exhibit in City Hall. The show is titled “Visions of Santa Clarita: Where the Good Life Takes You,” (Say, does anyone actually know what that tagline means?) and will be installed in the hallway of the ground floor – a.k.a. the “First Floor Gallery.” This is the very first time the hallway has been opened up for the display of artwork by local artists, and the community will see many more exhibits as Jeff Barber at the City works to fill the space in coming months. The PDF is not on their site, but you can grab one here.
