Mark your calendars! On Monday, November 20, 2010, the Santa Clarita Artists’ Association, award-winning watercolorist, Fealing Lin of San Marino, will make a watercolor demonstration. Her demonstration piece will be raffled off at the end of the evening.

Born in Taiwan, Lin began her journey as a protégé of renowned professor Ching-Jung Chen in Taiwan, and in the United States studied with watercolorist and senior art historian professor Verna Wells. Originally following her family tradition of medicine and dentistry, Fealing ultimately abandoned her tray of instruments and high-speed drills in favor of her pallet and brushes. Now she is a teacher, demonstrator, judge, and active exhibitor.

Professor William Blackshaw, President of the Royal Watercolor Society in England said, “Fealing Lin paints poems that vibrate with light and color… long may she continue to delight the eye and move the spirit.” With a fluidity of colors, Lin combines impressionistic strokes and semi-abstract techniques to elicit life and movement in her portrait and landscape watercolors.

“My passion for watercolor,” says Ms. Lin, “comes from the opportunity it gives me to be totally spontaneous in the pursuit of traditional watercolor transparency which is the “glow” from the white paper that emerges through the paint once a fusion occurs from the application of wet onto wet. Her paintings adorn the paper with both harmony and emotion.

Fealing is an annual guest instructor at Yosemite National Park, an instructor at Brand Art Studios at Brand Library in Glendale, and San Gabriel Recreation center in San Gabriel. She was featured at Descanso Gardens Gallery for 10 consecutive years. She has taught watercolor workshops throughout California and the US.

In addition, Fealing is a signature member of National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, and the Missouri Watercolor Society. She won numerous awards and was juried in many national exhibitions including NWS, WW, TWSA (Transparent Watercolor Society of America), Brand National, Audubon Artist, San Diego Watercolor International and many others. See more work by Fealing after the break.

Everyone is creative in Santa Clarita. That’s right! Everyone

While towns like Ventura are labeling themselves as The New Art Town and others, The Best Art Town, I think that the idea of celebrating our collective creativity is an exciting concept.

Everyone is creative in Santa Clarita. That’s right! Everyone

Everywhere you look, people are doing creative things (using their minds and imaginations to create and accomplish things, work out issues, etc.). Gardening is creative, as is cooking a great meal, or running a business. Our universities are filled with creativity. All of those people out there playing sports are creative (some more so than others).

I know this may sound REALLY OUT THERE, but it seems to me that no other town celebrates its creativity (as a whole). Why is an artists’ creativity worth any more praise or acknowledgment then someone that has created a really great garden, or someone that can cook an awesome meal? Everyone is creative.

I challenge Santa Clarita to think about defining creativity in a new way. If more people identified their work, career, job, or hobby as creative (just like an artist), I wonder what would happen?

Your new motto is “Santa Clarita: The Creative City”

Spread the word. Identify yourself as creative. Let’s see what happens.

- Six

A workshop production of the new musical “Sing Me a Happy Song,” will debut at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) at College of the Canyons Black Box Theatre, July 9-10 as part of this summer’s Festival of New American Musicals.

Penned by two of Broadway’s newest voices in Georgia Stitt and David Kirshenbaum, “Sing Me a Happy Song” is a contemporary musical revue about finding your heart in material times. With songs about modern-day relationships, searching for yourself on the Internet, striving to have everything but never having enough, love, family and your gay best friend, this five-character show is at once comic and poignant, smart and silly, emotional and timely.

The workshop production of “Sing Me a Happy Song” is being presented by the PAC and the COC theatre department, with student actors cast from the college’s course Theatre 193: Summer Theatre Workshop.

Performances will take place 8 p.m., Friday, July 9, and 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Saturday, July 10, in the PAC Black Box Theatre. General admission tickets are $15.

“Providing our students with the opportunity to participate in performing arts-based events like the Festival of New American Musicals is definitely one of our missions at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center,” said Adam Philipson, PAC managing director. “Working with Georgia and David to help shape their piece and debut it in our community is a great honor for us all.”

Running throughout the spring and summer months, the Festival of New American Musicals celebrates the return of the American musical by showcasing full productions, staged readings, concerts, master classes and other performance-based events in conjunction with performance arts organizations in cities across Southern California.

The College of the Canyons Student Orchestras consists of the college’s three main student instrumental performing groups: Prelude Strings, the Santa Clarita Youth Orchestra and the Symphony of the Canyons.

During the roughly 90-minute concert, each group will perform a series of musical selections designed to showcase the students’ talent and musical prowess, while entertaining audiences of all ages.

The evening will also serve as an opportunity to honor the orchestra’s five graduating seniors and congratulate them on their musical and academic accomplishments.

“This concert will provide audiences with a chance to see and hear what can happen when young people dedicate time to an instrument,” said Julissa Bozman, student orchestra associate conductor. “Performances like this are the students’ way of contributing to the Santa Clarita Valley’s unique culture of fine and performing arts, and I am proud to be a part of that.”

The College of the Canyons Student Orchestras’ End of Season Spectacular spring concert will take place at 7 p.m., Friday, May 28, on the PAC main stage. General admission is $10 or $5 for COC students and seniors.

From chart-topping pop, R&B and rock classics, to traditional Broadway, opera and mariachi to dance and acrobatics to family matinees and evening cabaret —plus a special Opening Night performance by Grammy Award-winning vocalist Michael Bolton — the 2010-11 season at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) at College of the Canyons will include something for everyone.

With more than 53 million albums sold, and numerous Grammy Awards for Best Male Vocalist, Bolton has touched the hearts of legions of fans. Now his 2010 “One World One Love” tour will take the PAC stage by storm Opening Night, Sunday, August 22, as part of the Chancellor’s Choice series.

“To land an artist as talented and world renowned as Michael Bolton for our Opening Night performance is a tremendous coup for the PAC, College of the Canyons and all of Santa Clarita,” said Adam Philipson, PAC managing director, “This is a testament to the growth and maturation of the PAC, as well as the tremendous support our patrons have shown for the performing arts.”

Other acts and artists featured in the 2010-11 PAC season include: War, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Vicki Lawrence, San Francisco Opera Grand Opera Cinema, Pilobolus, One Night of Queen, Gloriana, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, “All Shook Up,” “Seussical” and the Peking Acrobats.

The 2010-11 PAC schedule will offer shows spread across six series selections: Chancellor’s Choice, Great Performances, In Motion, Cabaret on Stage, Almost Free Family Series and the all new Broadway at COC series.

The PAC will also host a number of College of the Canyons theatre department and community theatre productions.

Series subscription sales will begin 11:30 a.m., Thursday, June 10, while individual tickets for Michael Bolton and all other performances will go on sale 9 a.m., Saturday, July 17.

Tickets can be purchased online, over the phone, or in person at the PAC box office.

However, it’s recommended that you plan to purchase your tickets early for Michael Bolton, as this once-in-a lifetime performance will sell out fast.

REDCAT: The group exhibition Never Very Far Apart brings together six projects that cross the poetic and political ground between the individual and the group; the local and the global; this moment in time and that place in history. Through performance, moving image, painting and printed matter, these artists explore distance as both border and bridge—considering how a finite position may parallel or intersect with seemingly disparate places or distant times.
